San Juan Hill
While
Lawton's 2nd Division was fighting its way into El Caney, the remainder of
the Fifth Corps was battling its way up two adjacent hills overlooking the
city of Santiago. Known as San Juan and Kettle Hills, it was a
battle that would make Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders National
heroes, though Roosevelt himself was the only Rough Rider to earn a
Medal of Honor, and even his would not be awarded for a century.
Sixteen other members of the US Volunteers, 10th US Cavalry, and the 10th,
13th and 21 Infantry Regiments earned Medals of Honor before the day.
