Stories of American Heroes - Brought to you from the "Home of Heroes" - Pueblo, Colorado

William Bernard Baugh

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
    Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
    Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
    From the sky.
All is well, safel
y rest,
    God is nigh.

Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
    Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
  Friend, good night.

Born:  July 07, 1930 at McKinney, KY

Entered Service in the US Marine Corps from Harrison, OH

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Korean War For heroism November 29, 1950 at Koto-ri to Hagaru-ri, Korea

Died:  November 29, 1950 at the age of 20

Private Baugh was serving as a member of an antitank assault squad during a nighttime enemy attack against a motorized column. Acting instantly when a hostile hand grenade landed in his truck as he and his squad prepared to alight and assist in the repulse of an enemy force delivering intense automatic-weapons and grenade fire from deeply entrenched and well-concealed roadside positions, Private First Class Baugh quickly shouted a warning to the other men in the vehicle and, unmindful of his personal safety, hurled himself upon the deadly missile, thereby saving his comrades from serious injury or possible death. The wounds he suffered by his gallant act were extreme and he died a short time afterward,
