Entered Service in the US Navy from Nebraska

Earned The Medal of Honor During Peace Time For heroism July 21, 1905 at San Diego, CA

Died:  February 09, 1963 at the age of 79

On July 21, 1905, while at San Diego, California, a deadly boiler explosion ripped through the U.S.S. Bennington. Of the ships 197 officers and crew, 62 were killed and more than 40 were wounded. Seaman Otto Schmidt was one of ten members of the Bennington's crew who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions to rescue comrades and minimize damage in the explosion and resulting fires. Others awarded Medals of Honor for this action were: Carpenter's Mate Second Class George Brock, Chief Gunner's Mate John Clausey, Boatswain's Mate William Cronan, Quartermaster Third Class Raymond Davis, Watertender Emil Fredericksen, Seaman Rade Grbitch, Ship's Cook First Class Frank Hill, Machinist's Mate Oscar Nelson, and Hospital Steward William Shacklette
