Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to George Arrington, Private , U.S. Army, for gallant and meritorious conduct while serving with a detachment escorting Major Joseph W. Wham, paymaster, U.S. Army, in an encounter with a band of robbers by whom the party was attacked between Forts Grant and Thomas , Arizona , May 11, 1889 .
D.S.C. issued in lieu of the certificate of merit and the D.S.M. under the provisions of the act of Congress approved March 5, 1931 .

Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles Braden, Second Lieutenant , U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near the mouth of the Big Horn River, Montana, August 11, 1873 . Lieutenant Braden, with 20 men, having been attacked by nearly 200 Indians, although severely wounded in the encounter, by his personal gallantry and splendid leadership so inspired his small command as to enable it to repulse the attack by overwhelmingly superior numbers.

Hoff, Captain (Assistant Surgeon), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against hostile Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee , South Dakota , December 29, 1890 . When the Indians made a sudden treacherous attack upon the troops Captain Hoff, with utter disregard for his personal safety, attended to the dressing of the wounds of fallen soldiers.

Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas Kelly, First Sergeant , U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in an engagement with hostile Chipewa Indians at Leech Lake , Minnesota , October 5 - 6, 1918 . Sergeant Kelly displayed extraordinary heroism in assuming, upon the death of his commanding officer, the command of the skirmishers on the right of the line. With utter disregard for his own personal safety he so gallantly led and directed his men that this action had much to do with the subsequent victorious result of the engagement.

Date of Action:  July 8, 1878
Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John A. Kress, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Umatilla, Oregon, July 8, 1878. Captain Kress volunteered, though not charged with combat duties, to organized and lead an expedition against bands of hostile Piute-Bannock Indians and to prevent their crossing the Columbia river . Captain Kress seized a river boat and equipped it as a gunboat and by his gallant and fearless leadership in patrolling the Columbia River was successful in five attacks upon the Indians, both on land and from the river; succeeded in capturing and killing their horses, destroyed their boats, arms, and ammunition, and camp equipage, thus frustrating their plan of spreading the war among the Indians to the North.
