A total of 6,309 Awards of the Distinguished Service Cross were awarded to 6,185 individuals for heroism during World War I, more than were awarded in any other period or conflict. They are divided as follows:

5,429 U.S. Army 319 U.S. Army Air Service 43 U.S. Navy 357 U.S. Marine Corps 7 U.S. Civilians
