Cole, Eli K. Colonel USMC

Aug 4, 1915 - 1917

On August 4, 1915 Colonel Cole landed in Haiti with the 2nd Regiment, US Marines to establish order following a coup earlier in the year that had led to unrest, chaos and murder. In 1917 he assumed command of the 1st Provisional Brigade comprising all Marine forces in Haiti, commanding the American forces in their efforts to restore order until his return home in November 1917.  In 1920 he was awarded the Navy Cross for his leadership of US Marines in Haiti during this critical period.

Pendleton, Joseph H. Brigadier General USMC Jun 18 - Dec 31, 1916

On June 18, 1916 the Fourth Marine Regiment landed at Monte Cristi under the command of Colonel Joseph Pendleton, who assumed command of all Naval forces ashore in Santo Domingo the following day. By June 27 the forces under his personal leadership had engaged and defeated enemy forces at Las Trencheras and Dona Antonia. On July 3 the rebel forces again attacked, this time on the road to Guayacanas. Again Colonel Pendleton led his men in repulsing the attack. On August 29 Colonel Pendleton was promoted to Brigadier General. From October 29, 1916 until November 29, 1917 he served as acting military governor of Santo Domingo, and thereafter as Military Governor until October 21, 1918. For his participation in engagements with the enemy at Las Trencheras, Dona Antonia, and Guayacanes, as well as his subsequent service as Military Governor, General Pendleton (for whom Camp Pendleton is named), was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Four others were also awarded Navy Crosses for action in the Dominican Republic during the period.
