Statistics:
A total of 12 Navy Crosses were Awarded to members of the U.S. Army in World War I
The first element of the A.E.F. under General John J. Pershing departed the United States on May 28, 1917. They were the first of more than 2,000,000 American soldiers sent to fight the war in Europe on Naval transports over a period of 18 months. Half a million were transported in the first year while the United States called up and trained hundreds of thousands more. In the last six months, a million and a half soldiers processed through and shipped from ten major American Ports of Embarkation.Of the ten Ports of Embarkation, the majority shipped out of Hoboken, NJ which also serviced New York City and Brooklyn. Hoboken was responsible for shipment of 75% of the servicemen going to England and France. Newport News, Virginia, was second in activity, processing and shipping 288,000 soldiers. Hoboken's role is best defined in General Pershing's words to his men about what awaited them, "Heaven, Hell or Hoboken by Christmas." In addition to serving as a departure point for war in Europe, Hoboken was the primary port on the route home.
Twelve members of the U.S. Army, all of them officers, received Navy Crosses for their distinguished service in the 24/7 operations required at Hoboken. They were the only Army recipients of the Navy Cross from its inception to the Panay Incident in December 1937.
