75 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Indiana

  • The FIRST MEDALS OF HONOR ever presented were awarded by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to 6 members of the legendary "Andrew's Raiders" on March 25, 1863. In that group and the 4th person in history to be presented the award was Indiana-born ELIHU MASON.

  • As a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, Peru's Richard Antrim stunned the enemy guards.  As 2700 American POWs watched helplessly as guards beat a fellow sailor almost to the point of death, Antrim stepped forward to stop the beating with the offer to accept the remaining punishment ordered for his fellow soldier.  The impact of that action spared a life and gained a new respect from the enemy for their prisoners.
