263 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Massachusetts

  • The FIRST MEDALS OF HONOR ever presented were awarded by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to 6 members of the legendary "Andrew's Raiders" on March 25, 1863. In that group and the 3rd person in history to be presented the award was Massachusetts-born ROBERT BUFFUM.

  • Boston born Arthur MacArthur, Jr. became the youngest Colonel of the Civil War in the years after his Medal of Honor action at Missionary Ridge.  When his son, General Douglas MacArthur received the Medal of Honor during World War II they became the ONLY FATHER/SON combination in history to receive Medal's of Honor.  Click on the green button below to read Arthur MacArthur's inspiring story of devotion to the Flag from our "Profiles In Courage" pages.
