49 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Wisconsin

  • bn_green.gif (852 bytes)The youngest COLONEL of the Civil War was Wisconsin's "Boy Colonel" Arthur MacArthur who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic rescue of the flag at Missionary Ridge.  Click on the green button at left to read the incredible story of Arthur MacArthur and his flag from our "Profiles in Courage" pages.

  • During World War II Arthur MacArthur's son DOUGLAS received the Medal of Honor.  They are the only FATHER AND SON in history to each receive their Nation's highest award for military valor.

  • World War II's ACE OF ACES was Wisconsin's Richard Bong.  Bong received his award on December 12, 1944 from fellow Wisconsin MOH recipient, General Douglas MacArthur.
