We believe that this index of Vietnam War recipients is 90% complete, though we continue to sort through records to identify late awards, as well as to compile additional information on the recipients (Rank/Unit/etc.) and their citations. Neal (2168567), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 24 May 1968 while participating in Operation Allen Brook in Quang Nam Province, Corporal Neal's squad was directed to relieve a squad from Company K which had been ambushed by North Vietnamese Army forces and was pinned down near the hamlet of Le Bac (1). As his squad approached the beleaguered unit's position, it immediately came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons and small arms fire from numerous well concealed enemy bunkers within a tree line. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Neal obtained a supply of ammunition, seized his machine gun and ran to the top of a deserted enemy bunker. Exposed to the enemy fire, he manned his weapon and began delivering a heavy volume of suppressive fire into enemy positions until his machine gun malfunctioned. Observing an unmanned machine gun, Corporal Neal ran fifty meters to the position, seized the weapon and an ammunition resupply and returned to his position. Immediately bringing accurate fire to bear against the enemy, he quickly gained fire superiority. Subsequently, after expending all his ammunition, he ran across the fire-swept area to the side of a wounded ammunition carrier, seized the re-supplies and returned to his bunker. Although constantly exposed to enemy fire, he ignored the rounds striking around him as he steadfastly sustained his position and continued to deliver effective machine gun fire against the enemy. Observing several casualties awaiting evacuation, he assisted in expediting their movement from the hazardous area. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Neal inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Richard Irving Neal (0-92178), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Artillery Forward Observer attached to Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 and 31 March 1967, First Lieutenant Neal was serving with Company I Command Group during Operation PRAIRIE III in Quang Tri Province. The company had established a night position on Hill 70 in the vicinity of Cam Lo near the Demilitarized Zone when it came under heavy enemy mortar fire. The Command Group immediately sustained numerous casualties and the Company Commander and the Executive Officer were killed during the initial moments of the attack. Quickly and expertly assessing the tactical situation, First Lieutenant NEAL immediately assumed command of the surviving members of the Command Group and, with exceptional professional skill and resolute determination, reorganized his unit and succeeded in gaining fire superiority over the numerically superior enemy force. Closely supervising the rapidly changing situation, he courageously moved throughout the fire-swept area directing counter fire and encouraging his men. Simultaneously, he skillfully called for and directed air and artillery support, which was instrumental in forcing the enemy to break contact. As the attack diminished, First Lieutenant Neal hastily reinforced his perimeter and secured a landing zone for the evacuation of the casualties. His daring and heroic actions undoubtedly prevented the enemy from overrunning his unit's position. By his inspiring leadership, aggressive fighting spirit, and courage in the face of enemy fire, First Lieutenant Neal upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Neu (1871047), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Sergeant with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division on 2 March 1967, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During a search and clear mission near Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province, Staff Sergeant Neu's platoon, advancing through a recently abandoned enemy base camp, came under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from concealed enemy positions. The platoon, accompanied by an additional squad, immediately returned fire and began maneuvering toward an opening In the dense jungle where they could better observe and fire upon the enemy. During the advance, the platoon commander and the radioman were both killed by enemy automatic weapons fire and Staff Sergeant Neu unhesitatingly assumed command. During the ensuing battle, he continuously disregarded his own safety and exposed himself to intense hostile fire to reorganize and consolidate his platoon for an assault on the enemy positions. Simultaneously, he skillfully directed the expeditious evacuation of all casualties and resupplied his unit with ammunition in preparation for the counter attack. After a reserve squad arrived to reinforce his unit and inspired by Staff Sergeant Neu's leadership, the Marines aggressively assaulted the North Vietnamese positions and routed the enemy force without sustaining further casualties. Throughout the firefight, his sound tactical decisions, aggressive fighting spirit and uncommon courage contributed materially to his platoon's destruction of the enemy force. By his exceptional leadership, military proficiency, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Staff Sergeant Neu upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Newton (2387353), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company I, Third battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 January 1968, Private First Class Newton's platoon engaged a North Vietnamese Army unit which was occupying positions on top of a hill. In the ensuing fire fight, the Marines sustained several casualties and were temporarily pinned down. Unhesitatingly moving to a forward position, Private First Class Newton commenced to direct fire against the enemy. Unable to adjust his fire because of the high grass, he repeatedly stood up and fired his weapon from the shoulder. Suppressing the fire from at least three enemy automatic weapons, he enabled his platoon to recover the wounded and maneuver to more advantageous positions. Disregarding his own safety, he continued to stand in the tall grass and provide covering fire for his companions until he was killed by the hostile fire. By his indomitable courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Newton upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Michael Kent Nickerson (0-100556), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing, in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 April 1969, First Lieutenant Nickerson launched as the Aircraft Commander of a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned the emergency medical evacuation of a seriously wounded Marine located 3000 feet up a mountainside in a jungle area southwest of DaNang. Arriving over the designated location, he observed that the rugged terrain dictated the utilization of a hoist and, although he realized the danger of being fired upon by hostile soldiers in the vicinity, he unhesitatingly directed his aircraft to a hover over the site. As the hoist was being lowered, the transport came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire from enemy soldiers occupying a ridge only 50 meters distant and sustained extensive battle damage. Although his helicopter was vibrating badly, First Lieutenant Nickerson struggled to maintain control and, when vital engine systems failed 150 feet above the trees, he displayed superb airmanship as he shouted encouragement to his crew and commenced guiding the crippled aircraft to an upright landing in the jungle canopy. Although he was mortally wounded during the emergency landing, his heroic and timely actions were instrumental in saving the lives of four crew members. By his courage, superior aeronautical ability and unwavering devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Nickerson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Howard B. Nielsen (0-104841), Captain [then Second Lieutenant], U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the First Platoon Commander with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 11 September 1968, Company M was conducting a search mission in Quang Nam Province when the Marines of the lead platoon came under intense automatic weapons, small arms and mortar fire from an entrenched North Vietnamese Army Force, pinning down the platoon and initially wounding seven Marines including the Platoon Commander. Efforts to withdraw the wounded under the intense fire caused four more casualties. Captain Nielsen personally advanced five times to the forward position of the engagement area, physically dragging wounded Marines to an area of relative safety at the edge of the treeline. The last two trips were to a position within 30 meters of the enemy position where he personally silenced an automatic weapons position with grenades and rifle fire. Reorganizing his platoon under cover of supporting arms, he fearlessly and without hesitation, led an assault on the remaining enemy positions, exposing himself countless times to the enemy fire while directing his Marines in the attack, thus causing the enemy to flee. Captain Nielsen's dauntless courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Niotis (0-81270), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 22 February 1968 during Operation Hue City, Captain NIOTIS aggressively led his company in an attack against fortified North Vietnamese Army positions along the southern portion of the Citadel wall. Completely disregarding his own safety, he courageously advanced with the forward elements, effectively directing his men and simultaneously calling in air strikes on enemy emplacements dangerously close to his own position. Taking his company in aggressive assault that overran the hostile positions. Again on 1 March, Captain NIOTIS led a bold attack against entrenched North Vietnamese positions east of the walled city. When his unit's advance was temporarily halted by heavy enemy resistance along a stream, he maneuvered forward of his lead elements to personally assess the situation. He then skillfully organized his men and executed a daring attack from the enemy's flank which routed the North Vietnamese and resulted in fifteen enemy confirmed killed. As a result of his outstanding tactical skill, his company did not sustain a single casualty during the assault. By his inspiring leadership, steadfast courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain NIOTIS was instrumental in the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

O'Donnell, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the Communist insurgents in the Republic of Vietnam, on 6 and 7 August 1966. As Assistant Advisor to the First Battalion, Vietnamese Marine Corps, which participated in Operation LIEN KET 52/COLORADO in Quang Tri Province, Major O'Donnell landed in the first assault wave in enemy held territory and moved with the lead company toward the enemy force. Although intense mortar and automatic weapons fire was encountered from the entrenched Viet Cong, the Marine battalion captured the enemy position, killed a large number of Viet Cong and took 17 enemy prisoners. While en route to their next objective, the Vietnamese Marines were opposed by determined enemy resistance. During the ensuing battle, Major O'Donnell received a radio message that the battalion advisor had been wounded. Without regard for his own safety, he traversed an open rice paddy exposed to enemy fire, to join the battalion commander. Three times Major O'Donnell was blown off his feet by concussion of mortar rounds, yet he continued on. Upon reaching the battalion commander, he adjusted artillery fire which forced the enemy to break contact. The following morning, Major O'Donnell again joined friendly forces in continuing the attack, which was halted by intense enemy resistance. From an exposed position, he directed a forward air controller in spotting the enemy fortifications, which were destroyed by friendly forces. Major O'Donnell's ready acceptance of responsibility and complete disregard for his own personal safety significantly contributed to the success of this operation, during which numerous Viet Cong were killed, wounded, or captured. Throughout the engagement, Major O'Donnell displayed devotion to duty, courage under fire and outstanding professionalism which upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

On the evening of 12 May 1967, after reinforcing another company heavily engaged with a well entrenched, numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force in Quang Tin Province, Staff Sergeant ORLETT rapidly assessed the situation and immediately established collection points for the evacuation of the casualties. He then ignored the heavy volume of hostile fire to assist the company commander in establishing a night defensive perimeter. Throughout the night, he moved repeatedly across the fire-swept area to ensure that maximum fire was being delivered against the enemy, forcing the North Vietnamese to break contact. When contact was reestablished the following day with an even larger enemy force and heavy Marine casualties were sustained, he completely disregarded his own safety as he maneuvered forward to exposed vantage points to pinpoint hostile emplacements and direct fire against them. Assuming the responsibilities of the Company Gunnery Sergeant when he was killed, Staff Sergeant ORLETT fearlessly moved through enemy fire to direct the employment of supporting arms, encourage his men and obtain and distribute vital ammunition re-supplies. When the company commander was seriously wounded, Staff Sergeant ORLETT moved to the company command post and coordinated the evacuation of the injured officer and other wounded Marines. On 28 February 1966, Captain Orsburn's Company was assigned as a subordinate element of Task Unit Hotel and was engaged in search and destroy operation in Thua Thien Province. When two companies on his right were subjected to intense automatic weapons and mortar fire from along a tree line, Captain Orsburn, upon receipt of his mission, unhesitatingly moved to the right flank of his Company to maneuver his forces in an envelopment of the enemy's right flank. Realizing his intention, the Viet Cong shifted a heavy volume of defensive fire in the direction of the Company. Completely disregarding his own safety, Captain Orsburn repeatedly exposed himself to the vicious hostile fire to direct the movement of his men across open ground. Although painfully wounded in the neck and shoulders by mortar fragments, he set an example of calmness and courage which inspired his men to overrun the enemy's defensive position in that sector. As a result of his exceptional leadership, more than twenty-eight Viet Cong were killed in position, and numerous weapons and equipment were captured. His daring effort contributed directly to the overall success of the operation. Corporal Ortiz was engaged as a member of a force assigned to cover the evacuation of dead and wounded from a landing zone under heavy fire from a large enemy force. His position was on the edge of the zone where intense enemy fire had been building steadily for an hour. Only a thin tree line stood between the company and two North Vietnamese Army Battalions firmly entrenched 1500 to 2000 meters away with interlocking grazing fields of fire. As the helicopter landed and his fellow Marines started to load the dead and wounded Corporal Ortiz saw the bar bank, 250 meters away, erupt in a hail of fire as the enemy attempted to halt the evacuation. With complete disregard for his own safety, he rose from his protected position, and firing his machine gun from a standing position, silhouetted against the background of the helicopter, delivered a steady stream of accurate, withering suppressive fire into the enemy. While fearlessly exposing himself to enemy fire in defense of his comrades, he was mortally wounded as the helicopter took off. His heroic action and initiative in defense of his fellow Marines undoubtedly resulted in saving the helicopter, the wounded aboard, and prevented further casualties. By his daring actions and selfless devotion to duty Corporal Ortiz was an inspiration to all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. On 17 August 1968, during Operation Mameluke Thrust, Company M was moving across an open area near the village of Phu Lac (1) in Quang Nam Province when the Marines suddenly came under intense mortar, rocket propelled grenade and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force. In the initial moments of the engagement, the lead element of Company M sustained two casualties who fell wounded only five meters from a hostile position. Rapidly assessing the situation, Captain PACELLO fearlessly rushed forward across 50 meters of fire-swept terrain to a vantage point from which he directed the movement and covering fire of supporting tanks. Then, with complete disregard for his own safety, he boldly maneuvered toward the injured Marines, and upon reaching their position, he was wounded in one arm by automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese soldier approximately five meters away. Ignoring his painful injuries, Captain PACELLO quickly killed the enemy soldier with a hand grenade and then moved the two casualties to a position of relative safety. Disregarding the accurate antitank rocket and mortar fire being directed at the tanks, he unhesitatingly climbed aboard one of the vehicles and commenced adjusting air strikes against the hostile emplacements, simultaneously coordinating an aggressive assault that forced the enemy to flee in panic and confusion. Continuing his determined efforts, he directed the establishment of a defensive perimeter and, despite the seriousness of his wounds, steadfastly refused medical evacuation until the following morning. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain PACELLO inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James Richard Parsons (0-67088), Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group THIRTY-SIX (MAG-36), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 4 February 1968, Major Parsons launched as the Aircraft Commander of a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned an emergency medical evacuation mission in support of a Marine unit which had sustained seventeen casualties during an engagement with the enemy in Hue City. Although visibility was well below that considered safe for helicopter flights, he volunteered to attempt the hazardous mission upon learning that several of the casualties required immediate medical attention. Utilizing a radar monitored departure and precision tracking en route, he arrived over the area and descended through the cloud layer. Unable to locate the landing zone due to the adverse weather conditions, he immediately climbed above the overcast and requested another vectored approach. Directed back to the site, his aircraft was hit by enemy .50 caliber machine gun fire as it descended through the clouds, forcing him to abort his approach and depart the area. Although his aircraft again came under hostile ground fire during a third approach into the designated landing zone, Major Parsons, refusing to abort the mission, resolutely descended through the thick overcast and made visual contact with the landing zone on his fourth approach. Disregarding the enemy fire directed at his aircraft, he skillfully avoided numerous small buildings in the area which were barely discernible in the thick fog and safely landed in the designated landing zone which was located behind a two-story building. After calmly remaining in the hazardous area for approximately ten minutes while the casualties were embarked, Major Parsons utilized a radar controlled vector to safely depart the hazardous area and transport the wounded to the medical facility at Phu Bai. His exemplary airmanship and sincere concern for his fellow Marines were an inspiration to all who served with him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of the hazardous mission. By his courage exceptional aeronautical skill and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, Major Parsons upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

On 14 April 1968, Company L was assaulting a large North Vietnamese Army force on Hill 800, near Khe Sanh Combat Base, when the Marines came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire and hand grenades and were pinned down. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Patterson unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and led an aggressive assault on the hostile positions. Although seriously wounded in the head during the ensuing fire fight, he fearlessly maneuvered forward across the fire-swept terrain, firing his weapon at the enemy. Ignoring his painful injuries, he steadfastly continued his determined efforts, and only after his men had forced the enemy to flee in panic and confusion, did he allow his wound to be treated. His superb leadership and aggressive fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. Pettengill (0-85115), Major [then Captain], U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Commanding Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines during Operation UNION TWO on 26 May 1967 in connection with combat operations against the enemy in South Vietnam. Leading his rifle company in the heliborne assault that led off this Operation, Major Pettengill's forces landed in the midst of approximately 1,000 enemy. Though seriously wounded by enemy fire, causing loss of hearing and severing several muscles in his neck, Major Pettengill retained command of his Company and professionally directed air and artillery fire to bear on the enemy positions. Refusing medical evacuation, he resolutely continued to render the enemy positions ineffective; thereby assuring the safe landing of the remainder of his Battalion in the landing zone. By his courageous and daring actions, complete disregard for his own personal safety, and selfless devotion to duty, Major Pettengill reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Terrance A. Picciano (2366238), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 6 June 1968, while conducting a patrol southeast of Con Thien, a platoon from Company E suddenly came under an intense automatic weapons and hand grenade attack from a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerous casualties. Observing that the wounded men lay in positions dangerously exposed to hostile fire, Lance Corporal Picciano volunteered to assist in moving them to a covered area. After he aided a companion in carrying a mortally wounded Marine into a bomb crater, an enemy hand grenade suddenly landed in the bottom of the crater. Without regard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Picciano seized the lethal object and hurled it toward the enemy, thereby preventing possible death or serious injury to his comrade. Then, quickly realizing that intense fire from an enemy sniper prevented further rescue attempts, Lance Corporal Picciano accompanied by another Marine, fearlessly left his position in an attempt to silence the hostile fire. Undaunted by the intense fire, he boldly rushed toward the North Vietnamese emplacement, and as he approached the fortification, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and enabled his unit to evacuate the wounded from the hazardous area. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Picciano upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Daniel Joseph Piotrowski (2122153), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, at Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 2 April 1966. The point man on Corporal Piotrowski's squad was wounded and pinned down by intense enemy fire in an exposed position. As the squad leader rushed to the aid of the wounded Marine, Corporal Piotrowski reacted without concern for his own safety. He immediately set in his automatic rifle in a completely exposed position in order to lay down a base of covering fire for his two comrades. Even though under fire himself, he remained at his position and continued the protective fire until the two Marines reached safety. Corporal Piotrowski's actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Randall Theodore Planchon, II (2296855), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving a Squad Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 May 1968, while Company M was conducting a tactical movement from the Khe Sanh Combat Base to Hill 689 in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Planchon's squad came under a heavy volume of mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying fortified positions and sustained several casualties. Reacting instantly, Corporal Planchon fearlessly maneuvered to three of his wounded men and evacuated them across the fire-swept terrain to a position of relative safety. While informing his platoon commander of the seriousness of the situation, he directed suppressive machine gun and antitank rocket fire and skillfully adjusted mortar fire upon the enemy emplacements. Disregarding his own safety, he unhesitatingly moved casualties through the intense hostile fire to a covered position on the top of a steep hill. As he was returning to his squad, the explosion of an enemy hand grenade violently knocked him to the ground. Undaunted, he quickly recovered and, shouting words of encouragement to his men, directed their fire against the hostile force while assisting in evacuating the wounded to a casualty collection area. Subsequently assuming the duties of his mortally wounded platoon sergeant, Corporal Planchon ignored the enemy rounds impacting near him while maneuvering about the hazardous area, organizing the evacuation of injured Marines, strengthening his platoon's defensive perimeter and adjusting mortar fire upon the North Vietnamese soldiers. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of numerous Marines. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and steadfast devotion to duty, Corporal Planchon upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Richard M. Purnell (0-85430), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division during Operation STARLITE near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam on 18 August 1965. As Executive Officer of Company I, First Lieutenant Purnell assumed command when his company commander was killed in action during an attack against heavily fortified insurgent communist (Viet Cong) enemy positions. Displaying calm courage and forceful leadership, he quickly reorganized his company and aggressively continued the attack to seize the assigned objective. Later that day his company was assigned the mission of penetrating deep into enemy territory to relieve a besieged Marine resupply column. During initial enemy contact, approximately twenty-five percent of the company's remaining personnel became casualties. Pausing only long enough to reorganize and evacuate the casualties, Lieutenant Purnell lead his company forward, driving through enemy positions and inflicting heavy casualties. In the course of the attack, Company I freed over fifty other Marines from an adjacent unit, who were cut off from friendly forces, by the entrenched enemy. With resourcefulness and determination, Lieutenant Purnell continued the search for the resupply column for over six hours before being ordered to return to friendly lines under the cover of darkness. Leading his company, he again passed through enemy lines, bringing his dead and wounded with him. During the withdrawal his company killed six more Viet Cong guerrillas. The personal bravery and decisive actions take by Lieutenant Purnell in the face of great personal danger resulted in a devastating defeat being inflicted upon the enemy. By his courageous actions, inspiring leadership and loyal devotion to duty, Lieutenant Purnell upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Bernard G. Purvis (2391296), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on January 29, 1969. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Lance Corporal Purvis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
