Loyd J. Leino

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Loyd J. Leino (37545234), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with a Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division in action against enemy forces on 12 June 1944, in France. During an attack on an enemy position, Private Leino’s company was pinned down by direct fire from an enemy 20-mm. cannon. Private Leino volunteered to destroy this enemy gun. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly worked his way through the heavy enemy fire until he reached a position from which he was able to kill or wound the enemy gun crew. Private Leino’s intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
