The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Walter I. Berlin, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 December 1944, in Germany. First Lieutenant Berlin braved a hail of lead and climbed atop a tank to direct it to destroy a pillbox. He remained in his exposed position until all enemy emplacements were knocked out.
