The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Edward D. Watson, Second Lieutenant, Headquarters Battery, 160th Field Artillery Battalion, for gallantry in action on 1 September 1944 at Meximeux, France. Second Lieutenant Watson proceeded as an artillery forward observer, under small arms and mortar fire to a point where he could effectively deliver artillery fire against an attack in progress. From his point of observation, he was subjected to direct tank fire, yet he continued to maintain his observation post. Second Lieutenant Watson’s action was instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack and permitting our forces to retain vital routes. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the high traditions of Armed Forces.
