Henry A. Nollen
Silver Star
World War II
U.S. Army
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Henry A. Nollen, Private, Medical Detachment, for gallantry in action on 15 August 1944 near St. Pierre, France. When the loading squad of his platoon was cut off by intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire and suffered heavy casualties as a result, Private Nollen, medical aid man, crawled forward to render first aid to the casualties. He was severely wounded himself by enemy mortar fragments. Despite his painful wounds, Private Nollen continued to the aid of several badly wounded soldiers, dressed their wounds and led them to a culvert where they were protected from the intense enemy fire. He remained to treat all casualties before he ministered his own wounds. Private Nollen’s gallantry reflects credit on the Armed Forces.
