Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 370 (October 4, 1945)
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Private First Class Henry T. Slack, Jr., 34 848 300, Infantry, Company “C”, 15th Infantry Regiment. At 1630 hours on 23 December 1944, near Sigolsheim, France, Private First Class Slack dragged a light machine gun fifteen yards into a commanding position to engage a German machine gun sixty yard from him that had temporarily halted his squad. Despite the enemy’s rapid fire that scarcely missed him, Private First Class Slack opened up on the Germans, and after a brief fight, he silenced the gun, killed three and wounded two of the crew.
