Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 370 (October 4, 1945)
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Sergeant James K. Sullivan, 33 857 285, Infantry, Company “L”, 7th Infantry Regiment. On 18 April 1945, Sergeant Sullivan set out to rescue his patrol leader who had been wounded by hostile small arms fire in Nurnberg, Germany. As he dashed forward, machine gun, machine pistol and rifle fire ripped the legs of his trousers, but he killed, with his tommy gun, a German who had hurled a grenade that burst 10 yards from him. Reaching the wounded soldier, who was within 75 yard of the enemy, Sergeant Sullivan lifted him up and began carrying him back to cover. Enroute, he observed four Germans crossing the street. Although burdened with the casualty, he fired several short bursts, killing all four of the enemy.
