The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Raymon G. Gutierrez, Private, Company E, *** Infantry, for gallantry in action on 9 September 1943, in the vicinity of ***, Italy. When his company was attacked by five enemy tanks, Private Gutierrez, automatic rifleman for an advance squad, placed his automatic rifle over a stone wall and opened fire on the tanks. The tanks returned his fire and the rifle was knocked from his hands while two bullets passed through the top of his helmet and one injured his right arm. Though wounded and armed only with a hand grenade and knife, he moved past the tanks and advanced under machine gun fire. He flanked the machine gun nest, expertly threw the hand grenade and soldier, who appeared to be uninjured, attempted to kill Private Gutierrez who quickly drew his knife and stabbed the enemy soldier to death. He performed these heroic deeds under his own initiative, without orders form his superiors. Private Gutierrez’s gallant action reflects great credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States. Entered service from El Paso, Texas.
