U.S. Army
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star medal to Robert D. Warren, Private First Class, U.S. Army. For gallantry in action on 4 March 1945 near Livergano, Italy. On this day the first platoon was defending practically isolated key positions near Luca, Italy. Private Warren, occupying a dugout on the flank, was ordered to hold this vital ground at all costs. At about 2200 hours a heavily armed fifteen-man enemy raiding party attacked the platoon positions. Two enemy soldiers moved on Private Warren’s post with machine pistols blazing. Unmindful of their overwhelming firepower, Private Warren bravely returned their fire and, with deliberate aim, killed both his attackers, one enemy soldier falling only three feet from his foxhole. His bold action aided in beating off this raiding party and the enemy fled in complete disorder. Private Warren’s superb courage and grim determination reflect the greatest credit on him and exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Army.
