The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Wilham J. Mathieson, Sergeant (then Private), U.S. Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States on 8 February 1945. During the attack on Olzheim, Germany, Sergeant Mathieson’s company was halted by heavy enemy fire. When all members of the light magine gun section, except himself and another ammunition bearer, became casualties, Sergeant Mathieson assumed command and ordered his comrade to follow him. After advancing approximately 40 yards, he set up his gun and, calling for ammunition, found his companion had been wounded. Without hesitation, he raced back and, recovering the ammunition, returned to his gun. Placing accurate fire on two buildings nearby, Sergeant Mathieson eliminated the source of enemy fire, enabling his company to advance and capture 51 prisoners. Sergeant Mathieson’s courageous and aggressive leadership exemplifies the highest traditions of the military service.
