The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Peter Funk, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 8th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4, 1918. Private Funk, together with his corporal, advanced under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire to a forward position, where Private Funk operated the machine gun, doing great damage to the enemy. These two remained with their gun in a far advanced position, alone, until their ammunition was exhausted.
