U.S. Army
By direction of the President, under provisions of the Act of Congress approved 9 July 1918 (WD Bul 43, 1918) and pursuant to authority contained in AR 600-45, the Silver Star for gallantry in action is awarded to: Sergreant Verle M. Curtis, RA39545364, Armor, United States Army, a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, distinguished himself by heroic achievement on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On this date Sergeant Curtis was placed in charge of a patrol whose mission was to reconnoiter a bridge and determine if tanks could cross. The bridge location was under heavy mortar and machine gun fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he constantly exposed himself, thereby drawing enemy fire and locating the enemy positions. The patrol was able to accomplish both missions as a result of the outstanding and courageous leadership of Sergeant Curtis. His actions were an inspiration to all who observed him and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
