General Orders 269. Headquarters 63d Infantry Division (19 June 1945)
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Robert E. Click, 20820802, Private, Infantry, Company “H”, 254th Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. During the attack on the Siegfried Line, a strong enemy force counter-attacked Private Click’s position, taking his company by complete surprise and finding it disorganized. Grasping the situation at once, Private Click, a squad leader, disregarding the heavy enemy automatic weapons fire, reorganized the defensive position and kept his gunners supplied with ammunition. When the platoon and second sergeants had been wounded, Private Click assumed command of his platoon and the riflemen around it and led them forward to better firing positions from which they repulsed the counter-attack with heavy losses to the enemy. Such bravery and leadership under fire reflect great credit upon Private Click and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
