General Orders No. 10820. Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division (28 August 1969)
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James Anderson, Private First Class, 25th Infantry Division, United States Army. For gallantry in action, Private First Class distinguished himself by heroic actions on 6 August 1969, while serving with Company C, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a sweep operation, Company C came in contact with a large enemy force. During the initial encounter, numerous casualties were sustained. When the company withdrew for supporting artillery fire, it was learned that a wounded man had been left behind in the kill zone. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Anderson drove his armored personnel carrier through the bullet swept area to the injured man’s position. Upon reaching the injured man, Private Anderson unhesitatingly exposed himself to the hail of fire as he dismounted his vehicle and evacuated his fallen comrade to a safe location. His valorous actions were responsible for saving a man’s life. Private Anderson’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
