The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John G. Belko, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Montblainville, France, September 27, 1918. Private Belko made several trips under heavy fire, carrying wounded comrades to shelter. On the same day he advanced alone 60 yards ahead of the line under heavy machine-gun fire and drove off about 20 of the enemy, who had been harassing his company with rifle grenade fire. He was later wounded in action.
