The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John N. Berg, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Sommauthe, France, November 4, 1918. Corporal Berg led his squad under heavy machine-gun fire in an attack on a machine-gun nest, capturing two machine guns, killing the gunners, and driving off the remainder of the crews. With his squad he held the position for one hour, until the arrival of the rest of his company.
