    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Theodore I. Berkeley, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Mont St. Pere, France, July 23, 1918. While in an open field swept by heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, Lieutenant Berkeley was ordered by his battalion commander to seek cover in the woods; but seeing a wounded man farther to the front, he went to his aid and brought him to a place of safety.
