    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to David M. Bowes, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Varennes, France, September 26, 1918. Second Lieutenant Bowes crawled forward under heavy fire at the risk of his own life and rescued a wounded soldier, who was lying about 150 meters in front of the trenches occupied by the advanced Infantry.
