General Orders No. 2, W.D., 1919
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to James B. Boyle, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, October 8, 1918. During an offensive of his organization, on the edge of Consenvoye Wood, Lieutenant Boyle led a flanking attack on the enemy, and by the skillful handling of his platoon captured two machine guns and opened a way for an advance which resulted in clearing the wood of the enemy and greatly assisted in obtaining our objective. Later Lieutenant Boyle was severely wounded while leading a wire-carrying party through, a heavy artillery barrage, refusing first aid until a soldier, wounded at the same time, had been attended to.
