General Orders No. 8, W.D., 1935
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas C. Bradford, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Bois-de-la-Fere, France, July 26, 1918. While advancing under intense machine-gun fire, Sergeant Bradford was severely wounded in the jaw but refused to be evacuated or to have his wounds dressed. Observing that the company was moving to a forward position, he motioned the men of his platoon to follow him and continued leading them until his weakened condition made it impossible for him to advance further.
