    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Herman A. Brocopp, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Waereghem, Belgium, October 31, 1918. Lieutenant Bronco, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, repeatedly led his platoon forward in the face of severe enemy fire. During the engagement his command captured two guns of an enemy field artillery battery. His coolness, courage, and bravery were a great inspiration to his men during this action. After the engagement he rendered valuable assistance to his company commander in organizing the company position for the night.
