The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Clifford E. Brown, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, October 23, 1918. Private Brown voluntarily went into a sector that was under an intense barrage of enemy artillery, machine, and gas-shell fire and assisted in bringing a wounded comrade to the first aid station.
