General Orders No. 126, W.D., 1919
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joseph R. Busk, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action east of Chateau-Thierry, France, June 17, 1918. Despite the coldness of the water, the swiftness of the current, and the presence of the enemy on the opposite bank, Lieutenant Busk completed a personal reconnaissance of the enemy’s position by swimming the River Marne, after which he took a patrol across the river in boats, and obtained valuable information regarding the movements of the enemy.
