The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Clark Butterfield, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cunel, France, October 14, 1918. Leaving his shelter in a shallow machine-gun emplacement, and accompanying an officer, Sergeant Butterfield ventured forth through a most intense fire, to the aid of a wounded officer, and assisted in carrying him a distance of 170 yards to safety.
