The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas F. Byron, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Hilaire, France, September 22, 1918. Assisted by another soldier Sergeant Byron rushed a machine-gun nest, which had been firing on their patrol. They succeeded in killing the crew.
