General Orders No. 50, W.D., 1919
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John C. Byrum, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Bellicourt, France, September 29, 1918. Although he was wounded at the very start of the attack, Sergeant Byrurn continued with the advance, reorganizing scattered units and leading them back to the lines. Later his arm was shot off, but he steadfastly refused evacuation until loss of blood so weakened him that he was taken to the rear.
