The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Cromwell E. Murray, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 18 – 22, 1918. Throughout the five days of battle, First Lieutenant Murrays conduct was marked by exceptional initiative and bravery. He organized infantry and machine-gun units and voluntarily led them in successful attacks against machine-gun nests.
