The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Bernard Van’t Hof, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, July 28, 1918. First Lieutenant Vant Hof directed his platoon so skillfully in attack near Sergy and conducted himself with such bravery and fearlessness that his men captured six machine-guns from the Prussian Guards and took 25 prisoners, which guns were then used with effect in driving the enemy from their positions.
