    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant John Sterling Lawton, United States Army, for coolness and steadiness under fire on 29 September 1879, while serving with Company D, 5th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Milk River, Colorado. Sergeant Lawton volunteered to accompany a small detachment on a very dangerous mission.
