The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Alonzo H. Pickle, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 14 August 1864, while serving with Company B, Minnesota Infantry, in action at Deep Bottom, Virginia. At the risk of his life, Sergeant Pickle voluntarily went to the assistance of a wounded officer lying close to the enemy’s lines and, under fire carried him to a place of safety.
