The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Colonel William Jackson Palmer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 14 January 1865, while serving with 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry, in action at Red Hill, Alabama. With less than 200 men, Colonel Palmer attacked and defeated a superior force of the enemy, capturing their fieldpiece and about 100 prisoners without losing a man.
