    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Freeman Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 November 1863, while serving with Company B, 80th Ohio Infantry, in action at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. Sergeant Davis, while his regiment was falling back, seeing the two Color Bearers shot down, under a severe fire and at imminent peril recovered both the flags and saved them from capture.
