    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Edward Edwin Dodds, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 July 1864, while serving with Company C, 21st New York Cavalry, in action at Ashbys Gap, Virginia. At great personal risk Sergeant Dodds rescued his wounded captain and carried him from the field to a place of safety.
