The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Edgar Pierpont Putnam, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 May 1864, while serving with Company A, 9th New York Cavalry, in action at Crumps Creek, Virginia. With a small force on a reconnaissance Sergeant Putnam drove off a strong body of the enemy, charged into another force of the enemy’s cavalry and stampeded them, taking 27 prisoners.
