The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Benjamin Thackrah, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 1 April 1864, while serving with Company H, 115th New York Infantry, in action at Fort Gates, Florida. Private Thackrah was a volunteer in the surprise and capture of the enemy’s picket.
