  • The Navy Cross is awarded to Hospital Apprentice First Class James H. Grantham, U.S. Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and heroic conduct while attached to the Ninety-fourth Company, Sixth Marines in action against the enemy in the Meuse-Argonne, France, November 1 – 11, 1918. With unwavering courage and utter disregard of all personal danger Hospitalman Grantham dressed and attended wounded in the face of constant and terrific machine gun and shell fire until he himself was killed while in the act of bandaging a wounded comrade.
