Distinguished Service Cross
U.S. Army
World War I
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Arthur H. Jones, Second Lieutenant (Air Service), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in the Toul sector, July 16, 1918. Lieutenant Jones and four other pilots were attacked by nine German pursuit planes. Without hesitation he dived into the leader of the enemy formation, pouring machinegun fire into him at 100 yards. After a quick and decisive combat the enemy leader fell out of control. He then attacked two of the other enemy planes, which were attacking him from the rear, and succeeded in driving them off.
