The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private James Dougherty, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in action on board the U.S.S. Benicia during the attack on the Korean forts, 10 and 11 June 1871. Private Dougherty sought out and killed the commanding officer of the Corean Forces.
