The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John Russell Litchfield, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near Thiaucourt, France, September 15, 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Litchfield displayed exceptional bravery in giving first aid to the wounded under shell fire. He was killed while taking a wounded soldier out of a trench to the rear.
