The Navy Cross is presented to George J. G. Bush, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and fearless devotion to duty on the occasion of the explosions from lightning at the Naval Ammunition Depot, Lake Denmark, N.J., on 10 July 1926. Although his sentry box was blown apart and he was thrown about thirty feet from it and was rendered unconscious, Private Bush, upon recovering, found the East Gate afire, placed a ladder against the high wire fence and assisted six civilians, including four children, to escape from the danger area. He remained on post until ordered out of the Depot for the purpose of assisting the Commandant’s wife, Mrs. Dowling, to escape.
